Before we get to download the app, we’ll want to set up some users in home assistant so that we will be able to log in on the app. To do this,
- Open your Home Assistant web interface by entering homeassistant.local:8123/ into a web browser. You will need to log in with your administrator account.
- Once you are logged in, click on the “Settings” option in the sidebar.
- From the Settings menu, select the “People” option.
- Click on “Users” to add a new user.
- In the “Users” menu, click on the “Add user” button.
- Enter the details for the new user, including their name, username, and password. You can also specify the user’s permissions level, such as whether they are an administrator or a regular user.
- Once you have entered all the required information, click on the “Create” button to save the new user.
Downloading and Installing Home Assistant on iOS
To download and install Home Assistant on iOS, follow these steps:
- Open the App Store on your iOS device.
- Search for “Home Assistant” in the search bar.
- Tap on the “Get” button next to the Home Assistant app to start the download process.
- Once the app is downloaded, tap on the “Open” button to launch the app.
Alternatively, you can also download the app directly from the Home Assistant website. To do this, follow these steps:
- Open the Safari browser on your iOS device.
- Go to the Home Assistant website (https://www.home-assistant.io/).
- Tap on the “Download Apps” link.
- Tap on the “Download in the App Store” button.
- Tap on the “Install” button in the pop-up window that appears.
- The app will start downloading, and once the download is complete, you will see the Home Assistant app icon on your home screen.
Downloading and Installing Home Assistant on Android
To download and install Home Assistant on Android, follow these steps:
- Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
- Search for “Home Assistant” in the search bar.
- Tap on the “Install” button to start the download process.
- Once the app is downloaded, tap on the “Open” button to launch the app.
Alternatively, you can also download the app directly from the Home Assistant website. To do this, follow these steps:
- Open the Chrome browser on your Android device.
- Go to the Home Assistant website (https://www.home-assistant.io/).
- Tap on the “Download Apps” link.
- Tap on the “Get It on Google Play” button.
- Tap on the “Install” button in the pop-up window that appears.
- The app will start downloading, and once the download is complete, you will see the Home Assistant app icon on your home screen.
Now we can get the Home Assistant Companion app set up and added into Home Assistant. Doing this will open up a lot of options for you. You’ll be able to access your Home Assistant instance from your phone, view dashboards, get notifications, and start using geo-location features. At this point, you won’t be able access Home Assistant from outside of your home, but we can fix that (in a future post). Right now, we’ll need to get the app configured.
- Once the app is downloaded, open it and select “Configure Home Assistant.”
- Assuming you are on the same network as your Home Assistant, the IP address should appear automatically. Click on it.
- Enter your username and password for your Home Assistant account.
- Once you have entered the necessary information, select “Connect.”
- The Home Assistant app will now connect to your Home Assistant instance. If the connection is successful, you will see a confirmation message. Select “Finish.”
- You will now be taken to the Home Assistant app’s main screen, where you can access your Home Assistant dashboard and control your smart devices.
- To add additional features to the Home Assistant app, such as push notifications or location tracking, select “Settings” from the app’s main screen.
- From the Settings menu, you can enable push notifications, set up location tracking, and adjust other settings to customize your Home Assistant app experience. You may also need to adjust battery and location settings in your phones menus as well to achieve the desired results.
Once you’ve finished these steps, you should be able to look under “Settings > People” menu and see the device assigned to the person you logged in as. Your phone should also show up under “Devices” and “Entities”.
